Frequently Asked Questions

  1. When can I sign up?
You can sign up for our lessons or classes at any time! Check out our registration page for more information or contact us.

  2. Can I start lessons or join a class in the middle of the month?
Yes you can! We do bill by the month, but you will only be billed for your first lesson on. We have continuous enrollment; once you begin, your lesson spot is yours for as long as you want it. The same policy applies to joining a group class in the middle of the month, or leaving lessons in the middle of the month. Click here to view our registration page.

  3. How old does my child need to be to receive private or semi-private lessons?
Children need to be at least 30 months old before they can sign up for the private or semi-private lessons. Children 6 months - 36 months are welcome to join our Baby & Me programs.

  4. How long should my child attend lessons/classes?
Your child can attend lessons for as long as you see fit. You should have a goal in mind when the lessons begin. Are you working to overcome a fear? To build confidence and safety skills? To improve technique, or maybe even work toward joining the Penguin Swim Team? Each participant's lesson is catered to fit their needs and goals.

  5. Why is your pool great for teaching lessons and classes?
Our pool is a nice warm 90 degrees, which is relaxing and comfortable for swimmers (especially little ones). Being comfortable helps students concentrate and perform. The pool length is 16 yards, which is less intimidating for kids and beginner swimmers. A large staircase descends into the shallow end and is a perfect place for kids to sit and get accustomed to the water, pool, and instructor.

  6. The participant is afraid of the water. How can you help them?
At FSS we offer lessons to all ages and abilities, and have techniques to ensure participants gain more confidence in the water. Over the past four years, we have successfully helped a great many participants overcome their fear of the water. It is important to make water-time a fun experience, and never a forced one.

  7. How do I change my lesson days and times?
If you need to change your lesson schedule, contact us by phone or email. More details about changes and cancellations can be found on our registration page.

  8. Can I request a specific instructor?
Yes, you can request a specific instructor, but we will have to check their schedule for their availability before we can sign you up. We are always happy to work with you to find a good fit with your instructor.

  9. Why only a 30-minute lesson?
We have found that a 30-minute lesson suits youth and adult participants the best. After 30 minutes, lessons tend to lose productivity due to fatigue and decreased focus. Remember, you will work much harder one-on-one with an instructor than you would in a large group class!

  10. Can I sign up for more than one lesson a week?
Yes! We have several families that come to the center twice a week for lessons.

  11. Can my child take lessons with a sibling or friend?
Yes! You are free to put together your own group of up to 4 swimmers per lesson. It is best if the children in the lesson are close to the same skill level.
