Teacher Annie is teaching another Intro to Infant Swimming Clinic in this video and she is teaching parent/guardians to do under water passes with their swimmers. Annie uses the command "ready go" (short commands are best!), demonstrates the holds and makes sure the swimmer is fully emerged before passing him to mom. This mom has taken 2 of her other kids through our program, so she is familiar with the skills. As she catches her son, she brings him to the surface in a roll, so he ends the skill on his back. The goals is to teach babies that when they are under water, to always roll when they reach the surface, so they are on their back floating and can cry/yell for help and use the back float to rest. Baby (infant) swimming: 8 month old going under water for first time with a roll into a back float
Owner Adam Farber is taking his 6 week old daughter swimming for the first time. Here he is using bath mats to help her float independently. The goal is for both of baby's ears to be out of the water or both under water - this helps make this activity more successful for the baby! (No one likes water splashing in 1 or both ears.) Why independently? As babies grow, they can adapt and learn swimming skills better, if they learn what their body feels like in the water, without being held all the time. Such a fun activity to do in our Baby & Me Classes. For the older swimmers (ages 18-35 months), we start them walking through the hoop and eventually they learn to swim through it! One of our favorite Baby & Me class activities to do in the shallow end of our pool. Fill a bucket with hollow balls, put the bucket & balls under water and then watch them POP out of the water! The kids have fun reaching and picking up the balls. For walkers (or close to being walkers), they can walk to get the balls! When we installed a saltwater system on our pool at our Portland location, adding 33 bags of salt was one of the steps. Once the salt was in, we spent the next 20 minutes using a pool brush to stir and dissolve it. Adding salt to a swimming pool!
We love introducing noodle boats at our Baby Clinics and using them at each Baby Class. The boats (pool noodle with a dive ring on it) help motivate kicking, balance keeping, independence from parents and they are super fun! Every October we hold the Pumpkin Plunge, where we fill our pools with pumpkin! This little swimmer was swimming under the pumpkins, so we had to capture it!
